Preservation Terms
ACID FREE: A definition of materials having a pH of 8.0 or greater with a minimum Calcium Carbonate buffer of 3%.
ARCHIVAL:
When used in reference to plastic, ARCHIVAL/ARCHIVAL QUALITY/ARCHIVAL SAFE are terms used to describe products that can be safely used for preservation purposes. They must be durable, chemically stable, and meet strict specifications as set forth by the U.S. Library of Congress and the U.S. National Archives.
Their standards for ARCHIVAL polyester film sleeves are "Must be a clear, colorless, (biaxially oriented/stressed drawn) polyethylene terephthalate film such as DuPont's Mylar® type D, ICI's Melinex® 516 or the equivalent. The film must not contain any plasticizers, surface coatings, UV inhibitors, or absorbents. Material must be guaranteed to be non-yellowing at ambient temperatures with natural aging, dimensionally stable, and resistant to most chemicals, moisture and abrasion."
All of the above specifications must be included in order to be called ARCHIVAL SAFE. For example, if the presence of a UV inhibitor or surface coatings are found on the material, it is not considered to be ARCHIVAL even though the material may have a poly(ethylene-terephthlate) base.
Although there are many types of polyethylene terephthalate film, only Mylar® type D and Melinex® 516 meet the above specifications.
MYLAR®: The trade name of Duponts polyethylene terephthalate. Although there are many types of Mylar® only Mylar® type D is suitable for archival preservation. (See Archival)
