1. What is a Life-X-Tenders Plus™?
Life-X-Tenders Plus™, using technology developed by Bell Labs, is a layer of highly reactive copper bonded into a polymeric extender. It is a completely protective barrier existing on the surface of the sheet. It is effective on contaminants found in air such as sulfur oxides, nitrous oxides and ozone that are typically found in comic books and in storage enclosures. With this barrier, corrosive gases are chemically neutralized and rendered permanently inert to prevent the deterioration of paper.† It is so powerful that only two sheets inserted one third of the way in from the front and the back of the book is needed to protect it!
2. How will it prevent my books from turning yellow with age?
Books turn yellow from acid hydrolysis that comes from the generation of acetic acid as paper deteriorates. Life-X-Tenders Plus™ will neutralize the acids and prevent hydrolysis from occuring.
3. Will this product deacidify my comic books?
No, but it will prevent the continual formation of acids from paper deterioration and from any free sulfur thatcan combine with moisture to form sulfuric acid
4. How many sheets of Life-X-Tenders Plus™ should be inserted into one comic book?
Ideally, every page should be interleaved with a Life-X-Tender Plus™, however, it seems that two pages per comic book, about a third of the way in from the front and back covers, combined with the use of Life-X-Tenders™ backing boards should be effective.
5. Do you still need to use Life-X-Tenders™ acid free backing boards if you are using Life-X-Tenders Plus™?
It is a good idea to do so for the extra protection from organic pollutants.
6. The product is black on one side and beige on the other. Does it matter which side is against the paper?
No, however, the greatest effect is on the black side.
7. What type of tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of this product?
The same gases and contaminants that cause corrosion of silver also cause the deterioration of paper and textile materials. Tests were conducted in an atmosphere of high Sulfurous Oxides, Nitrous Oxides, Hydrogen Sulfide and Ozone gases.
8. What is the difference between Life-X-Tenders Plus™ and Life-X-Tenders™?
Life-X-Tenders are a charcoal-lined white backing board designed to absorb organic gases and acids. They act as pre-filters for contaminants when used with Life-X-Tender Plus™.
9. Are there like products on the marketplace?
There is nothing as effective as the Life-X-Tender Plus™ chemistry short of storing materials in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen.
10. How long will they last?
At least ten years.
11. Will the use of the product allow me to leave the tops of my Mylar® sleeves open?
The best preservation comes from maximum protection. Sealing sleeves prevents the build up of new atmospheres and fosters a more constant atmosphere in which Life-X-Tenders Plus™ can conduct its operations. For this reason we recommend using our Mylar® Time-Loks®.
